A position as Associate Professor in History of Ideas/Intellectual History, specializing in Antiquity and/or the Middle Ages, is available at the Department of Philosophy, Classics, History of Arts and Ideas, University of Oslo.

The applicant must document proficiency in Greek or Latin and have research qualifications within the study of Antiquity, late Antiquity and/or the Middle Ages. Scholarly breadth within the field will be given emphasis. Scientific competence in the reception of ideas originating in Antiquity is desirable. The successful candidate must document familiarity with History of Ideas/Intellectual History as a scholarly discipline. Experience from interdisciplinary project collaboration will be an advantage.

The successful candidate is expected to initiate and lead research, supervise PhD candidates, participate in teaching and in exam settings and assessment at all levels, and to carry out administrative duties in accordance with the needs of the Department.

Requirements

  • PhD or equivalent academic qualifications with a specialization in Antiquity and/or the Middle Ages
  • Competence in Greek and/or Latin

  • Academic production on Antiquity and/or the Middle Ages with emphasis on works published within the last 5 years. Originality and innovative thinking will weigh more heavily than quantity

The selected candidates are expected to contribute to the objective in the University of Oslo’s strategic plan to ‘strengthen its international position as a leading research-intensive university through a close interaction across research, education, communication and innovation’.

The successful candidate who at the time of appointment cannot document basic teaching qualifications will be required to obtain such qualifications within a two-year period.

The successful candidate must demonstrate mastery of both English and one of the Scandinavian languages as working languages. If an appointee is not fluent in a Scandinavian language, the appointee will be expected within a two-year period to learn sufficient Norwegian to be able to participate actively in all functions the position may involve.

Selection procedure

Applicants who are invited to submit academic works are asked to select three works, published within the last five years, to be considered as most relevant for the position. In longer publications (monographs), applicants should specify the relevant pages. Applicants are further asked to submit a description of one or more research projects considered relevant for the Department. Applicants are also asked to submit a portfolio that documents other qualifications (public outreach, teaching and supervision, and any experience with leadership and administration).

Finally, the most highly ranked candidates will be invited to an interview and a trial lecture.

Within his/her normal duties and in accordance with his/her academic competence, the person appointed may also be asked to work outside his/her Department. The appointment is made under the condition that the employer may change the subject area and assigned tasks according to the needs of the Department.

Doctoral Research Fellowship in Classics

A Doctoral Research Fellowship (SKO 1017) in classics is vacant at the Department of Philosophy, Classics, History of Art and Ideas at the University of Oslo (UiO).

Preference may be given to applicants working in the following areas in which the Department has particular research strengths: Augustan poetry, Greek epic, papyrology, Greek and Latin syntax and semantics, translation studies. Applicants who have recently graduated with excellent results may also be given preference.

The successful candidate must participate in the Faculty of Humanities’ research education program (cf. regulations and supplementary provisions for the Faculty’s research education) and must also engage in the designated research activities on a 100 percent basis.

The person appointed will be enrolled in the Faculty’s organized research training. The academic study terminates in a doctoral thesis to be defended at the Faculty, leading to a PhD-degree.

The candidate will be expected to have his/her residence and work place in Oslo, and to be an active member of the classics community in Oslo. Read more about the doctoral degree.

The post is available for a period of three years, starting as soon as possible. Currently, PhD fellows who successfully submit their thesis within the three-year period are granted an additional fellowship year.

Qualifications

  • A Master’s Degree or equivalent in a field relevant to the topic of the doctoral dissertation. The Master’s Degree has to have been achieved by the time of application.
  • Personal suitability and motivation for the positions.

In assessing the applications, special emphasis will be placed on:

  • The project’s scientific merit, research-related relevance and innovation
  • The applicant’s estimated academic and personal ability to complete the project within the time frame
  • The applicant’s ability to complete research training
  • Good collaboration skills and an ability to join interdisciplinary academic communities
