An der Philosophischen Fakultät der Universität Mannheim ist zum nächstmöglichen Zeitpunkt eine Juniorprofessur (W1) für Alte Geschichte für eine Dauer von zunächst drei Jahren zu besetzen. Nach positiver Evaluation ist eine Verlängerung um weitere drei Jahre möglich.

Ein Schwerpunkt in Forschung und Lehre soll auf der Spätantike und dem Epochenübergang Antike/Mittelalter liegen. Die Stelleninhaberin/der Stelleninhaber soll sich nach Maßgabe des dienstrechtlichen Aufgabenkatalogs sowie der mit der Stelle verbundenen fachspezifischen Anforderungen durch die selbständige Wahrnehmung von Aufgaben in Forschung und Lehre in ihrem/seinem jeweiligen Fachgebiet für die Tätigkeit einer Hochschullehrerin/eines Hochschullehrers weiterqualifizieren.

Die Einstellungsvoraussetzungen richten sich nach § 51 Abs. 2 und 3 Landeshochschulgesetz (LHG) in der derzeit gültigen Fassung. Neben einem abgeschlossenen Hochschulstudium sowie dem Nachweis einer herausragenden Promotion werden pädagogische Eignung sowie eine durch zusätzliche wissenschaftliche Leistungen belegte Befähigung für die Übernahme der Position einer Juniorprofessur erwartet. Die Einstellung erfolgt bei Erfüllung der allgemeinen dienstrechtlichen Voraussetzungen im Rahmen eines Beamtenverhältnisses auf Zeit zunächst für die Dauer von drei Jahren, welches nach positiver Evaluation auf insgesamt sechs Jahre nach Maßgabe der gesetzlichen Regelung (§ 51 Abs. 7 und 8 LHG) verlängert werden kann.

Die Universität Mannheim misst einer intensiven Betreuung der Studierenden einen hohen Stellenwert bei und erwartet deshalb von den Lehrenden eine ausgeprägte Präsenz an der Universität. The Department of Art History conducts teaching and research in Art History, Textile History, and Cultural Conservation Studies at two sites, Engelska parken, Uppsala, and Campus Gotland, Visby.

Duties: The position includes teaching, examining and supervising undergraduate, MA and PhD students with a focus on architecture, urbanism and cultural heritage during the Middle Ages and the Early Modern period. Teaching includes assuming responsibility for the broad-spectrum introductory courses on the undergraduate level, course administration and supervision. The applicant might also be asked to undertake administrative duties, or general responsibility for the department’s education programs. The position includes research.

Place of employment: Campus Gotland, Visby, is the place of employment, although tuition in Uppsala as well as distance tuition may occur.

Eligibility requirements: An applicant is eligible for employment as Senior Lecturer if she or he has completed a doctorate in art history or possesses academic qualifications that the employer deems as equivalent, has documented good teaching ability and has the personal capabilities required to carry out the duties of the position well.

A condition for the determination that the necessary pedagogical expertise exists is that the applicant has completed relevant tertiary-level teacher training comprising at least ten weeks or has in some other way acquired equivalent proficiency. In special cases, the tertiary-level teacher training may be completed during the first two years of tenure.

Documented ability to teach both in Swedish and English is required.

A position as Associate Professor in History of Ideas/Intellectual History, specializing in Antiquity and/or the Middle Ages, is available at the Department of Philosophy, Classics, History of Arts and Ideas, University of Oslo.

The applicant must document proficiency in Greek or Latin and have research qualifications within the study of Antiquity, late Antiquity and/or the Middle Ages. Scholarly breadth within the field will be given emphasis. Scientific competence in the reception of ideas originating in Antiquity is desirable. The successful candidate must document familiarity with History of Ideas/Intellectual History as a scholarly discipline. Experience from interdisciplinary project collaboration will be an advantage.

The successful candidate is expected to initiate and lead research, supervise PhD candidates, participate in teaching and in exam settings and assessment at all levels, and to carry out administrative duties in accordance with the needs of the Department.

Requirements

  • PhD or equivalent academic qualifications with a specialization in Antiquity and/or the Middle Ages
  • Competence in Greek and/or Latin

The successful candidate who at the time of appointment cannot document basic teaching qualifications will be required to obtain such qualifications within a two-year period.

Selection procedure

Qualified applicants to submit a portfolio of educational certificates and academic works (up to 10 publications, which should not exceed 500 pages in total) for expert assessment. Applicants who are invited to submit academic works are asked to select three works, published within the last five years, to be considered as most relevant for the position. In longer publications (monographs), applicants should specify the relevant pages. Applicants are further asked to submit a description of one or more research projects considered relevant for the Department. Applicants are also asked to submit a portfolio that documents other qualifications (public outreach, teaching and supervision, and any experience with leadership and administration).

Finally, the most highly ranked candidates will be invited to an interview and a trial lecture.

Within his/her normal duties and in accordance with his/her academic competence, the person appointed may also be asked to work outside his/her Department. The appointment is made under the condition that the employer may change the subject area and assigned tasks according to the needs of the Department.

The Faculty of Arts is seeking to fill the following (100%) vacancy in the Department of History:  tenured academic staff in the area of cultural and/or political medieval history.

Job description

  • Among others you will be assigned following lecturing duties Middle Ages; Cultural History (6 STP and 45 hours) and/or Middle Ages: Politics and Institutions (6 STP and 45 hours), Heuristics per Historical Period: Middle Ages (30 STP and 30 hours) and Historical Workshop (6 STP and 45 hours).
  • You will expand the scientific research in the area of the cultural and/or political history of the Middle Ages with the Centre for Urban History and/or Power in History: Centre for Political History.
  • You will acquire and manage external funding (national and international).
  • You will offer scientific services: among others you take an active part in the organisation of the teaching and research of the Department of History. In due course you will also take on managerial responsibilities.
  • You contribute actively to the international visability of the Department of History.

Profile and requirements

  • You hold a doctorate degree (PhD) in History or a comparable dissertation on the cultural and/or political history of the European Middle Ages.
  • You have several years of postdoctoral experience or equivalent.
  • The focus in your teaching corresponds to the educational vision of the university.
  • Your academic qualities comply with the requirements stipulated in the university’s policy.
  • You have leadership skills (or the potential to develop them).
  • You are quality-oriented, conscientious, creative and cooperative.
  • You can meet the statutory language requirements for both the knowledge of the teaching language and the administrative language, Dutch. The University of Antwerp provides the necessary support.
  • Your research profile is compatible with that of the Centre of Urban History and/or that of Power In History: Centre for Political History.

We offer

  • commensurate with the experience and the academic qualifications
    • either a full-time position as a lecturer, in a temporary appointment in the tenure track for a term of five years. This position will lead to an immediate permanent appointment as a senior lecturer if the performance is assessed favourably on the basis of previously fixed and publicly announced evaluation criteria.
    • or a full-time position as a senior lecturer or higher, generally entailing a permanent appointment. In the case of a first appointment to the corps of academic personnel (ZAP), the university board may proceed to a temporary appointment for a period not exceeding three years. This position will lead to a permanent appointment if the performance is assessed favourably.
  • the date of appointment will be 1 October 2016;
  • a gross monthly salary ranging for lecturer from € 4.009,52 – € 5.910,19; and for senior lecturer from € 4.591,43 – € 7.213,07;
  • a dynamic and stimulating work environment.
