The Department of Classics and Ancient History is seeking to appoint a suitably qualified candidate to a one-year fixed-term lectureship in ancient philosophy for the academic year 2016/17 (01 October 2016 – 30 September 2017).

The successful applicant will contribute to research-led teaching of ancient philosophy and Greek literature; these are areas in which the Department has particular teaching needs. The successful candidate should have the ability to teach Greek language and should have a research specialism in some aspect of ancient philosophy.

We are seeking to recruit a colleague to join our team of academics within the discipline of Classical Studies.

You will contribute to the undergraduate and postgraduate teaching of Classical Studies, supporting teams responsible for the presentation, assessment and quality assurance of our modules and for the interdisciplinary modules to which we contribute.

You will have a PhD in Classics, Classical Studies, Ancient History, Classical Archaeology, Archaeology or a related subject. You must have a profile of teaching excellence in the culture, literature and/or history of Classical Greece and will preferably be able to contribute to the teaching of Ancient Greek (and/or Latin) at beginner’s level. You will build on your proven successful teaching experience in higher education, and demonstrate an understanding of our approach of supported open, distance and online learning.

You will also be a researcher with the potential to produce high quality research outputs including work of an international standard.

The Faculty has a strong commitment to collective working in teaching and scholarship, and to the career development of new and existing staff.

You will provide teaching in Greek language, history, and culture, replacing Dr Michael Scott who is on research leave.

You will organise and teach the modules Greek Literary Texts + Greek Religion, contribute to the first-year core module Greek Culture and Society, and supervise undergraduate dissertations.

You will need experience in lecturing, leading seminars, marking and giving constructive feedback, supervising, and language teaching.

This is an opportunity to gain a wide range of teaching experience within a supportive department, with undergraduates from a variety of backgrounds, devising your own teaching materials within the scope of the current prescriptions for these modules. You will be involved in many aspects of departmental life, tracking students’ progress, participating in staff meetings, our Classics Dept Greek Theatre Outreach Event for schools, and Open Days. You will be expected to be available to students at least 3 days a week in the department during term time.
