Gate to the Eastern Mediterranean (GEM) is the postgraduate student society for the Centre for Byzantine, Ottoman and Modern Greek Studies (CBOMGS), University of Birmingham. The aim of GEM is to create a platform for interaction, exchange of ideas and communication of research projects and findings for the students at the Centre.
GEM brings together students in all areas related to Byzantine, Ottoman and Modern Greek Studies. These three distinct, but related, fields share the same geographical context spanning a period of over 1,500 years.
Created in the academic year 2012-2013 and based at the University of Birmingham, GEM encourages collaboration between its members and other societies and departments within the School of History and Cultures at the University of Birmingham and beyond.
