Purpose and Main Duties

We are looking for someone to teach the first year undergraduate course, entitled The Greek World: Archaic to Classical Periods, in the academic year 2016/17.

This is a general survey course, covering the history of the (extended) Greek world from about 800 to 336 BC. The format of the course is one-hour lecture, followed by two seminar hours, which normally address some of the key questions, methodological approaches, or sources used in the lecture.

The course takes place over 20 weeks, beginning in early October. We suggest a chronological approach, followed, if needed, by some thematic classes. The course is taken by first and second year students in our BA History, BA History and Archaeology, BA Classics, and BA Classical Studies programmes.

Candidate Requirements

The minimum requirements for selection are listed below:

  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent;
  • As a minimum at the corresponding level of award as required to teach (or equivalent professional/industry level experience).

Please note: candidates need to demonstrate competence or significant potential in all areas.

A suitable candidate should have research interests in Greek history and culture (including material evidence), and ideally some experience in teaching in Higher Education.

Further Information

Remuneration: Grade 7 of the College’s London Pay Scale which is starting rate £56.93 per hour (inclusive of holiday pay) for contact hours worked.

The salary quoted above is based on an hourly rate dependent upon length of serve with the College. This hourly rate is based on the starting point of Grade 7 and is inclusive of a ‘Duties Related to Teaching Multiplier’ which covers preparation; teaching, administration, assessment marking and other examining duties in connection with the course. The College’s London Pay Scale includes a consolidated Weighting/Allowance which applies only to staff whose normal contractual place of work is in the Greater London area. This appointment is subject to a probationary period of 18 months.
